What do *you* want to know?
This is Chichi is currently a one girl band who enjoys nothing more than
playing her unique brand of emotive rock acoustica in and around
Manchester, England's capital of cool.
But it hasn't always been this way... At the age of six she became a
pianohead and remained one of those until she was about 11 when her dad
handed her the guitar she'd been after ever since she saw Dire Straits
on Top of the Pops. Incidentally, she went to the same high school as
Mark Knopfler; during a dreary afternoon lesson her maths teacher
divulged that he still had one of his notebooks. She was still a
pianohead at the time and didn't take any notice.
Anyway, being a mad, music-loving tomboy, it
seemed like another one of those 'toys for the boys' she had to have,
along with Lego and Transformers, and to his relief he could stop hiding
his and her mother's tennis rackets.
Oddly enough she was to remain a devoted pianohead over the next few years, taking piano lessons and playing this most fundamental of instruments at school and at church and wherever she was asked
to; immersing herself in his and her mum's collection of 60s and 70s
pop and soul records and listening to classical music. She sometimes wondered how
anyone could spell 'Tchaikovsky'.
Six years later she stumbled across that first guitar, covered in dust
and warped. No one had been able to change broken guitar strings
in the household and so it was brushed aside...and forgotten.
She took it to a guitar-playing friend of the family to fix. Everyone
reckoned he could fix one since he played one. He couldn't but on seeing
her enthusiasm for the rather battered instrument he kept telling her
he could until he found a replacement. And so began her love affair.
Today she plays a unique style on acoustics and searing lead on
electrics, favouring fat strings and thick picks. In that awkward place
between painting her own sound and capturing it on tape, she sings and
plays her emotive blend of pop/rock wherever she can and dabbles in
analogue recording whenever she cannot, all the while
perfecting the art of writing inexplicably original songs and reinventing fretwork
on the six string.
